Join The Band!

The Birmingham Concert Band is an acknowledged leader among community bands in the state of Michigan. The band has entertained audiences by performing the best literature for concert bands and featuring guest artists of stature, in addition to providing a creative outlet for area musicians. Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings in the Groves High School band room from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m. Membership is open to all adults with previous instrumental ensemble experience and all performers who play a concert band instrument are welcome. There is no audition required, but band members are expected to learn and know their music prior to all performances. (click here for a Groves H.S. map)

Our Conductor

Music Director and Conductor: Mr. Grant M. Hoemke

Grant Hoemke was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Birmingham Concert Band in 1980 because of his expertise in band literature and his interest in providing a performing outlet for adult musicians. A graduate of Wayne State University, he has taught instrumental music at all levels for over 25 years. In the fall of 1992, Mr. Hoemke served as acting Director of Bands at Wayne State and has also conducted the WSU High School Summer Band program.

Mr. Hoemke serves as an adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor throughout Michigan. He studied conducting with Dr. Harry Begian, Jerry H. Bilik, and Dr. Joseph Labuta. He is a member of ACB, MSBOA, and Phi Mu Alpha. Mr. Hoemke's enthusiam, skill, and joy in music-making have secured his reputation as a leading music educator, administrator, and conductor.
